Ovila Joseph LaPlante, 69, of Tucson, AZ died on April 19, 2014. He was born at Crow Agency, MT. Joe was an enrolled member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. Graveside services with military honors were held April 29, 2014 at Reservation Community Memorial Park west of Wapato. After graduating from high school in Toppenish, WA, he joined the Marine Corps in 1964. He was a combat Marine and served in Vietnam in 1965 with Bravo Co., 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Division. In 1947 he entered Central Washington University, Ellensburg, WA. He earned a BA in history, sociology, and education. In 1978 he earned a Masters of Art degree in Education Administration as well as his Principal Credentials at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. After graduation he was employed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs for approximately 26 years in Toppenish, WA, Durango, CO, Hoquiam, WA, Ft. Washikie, WY and San Carlos, AZ. He worked with various Indian tribes and Job Corps. Joe retired in 1997 as the Superintendent at the San Carlos Agency in San Carlos, AZ. Joe had a great sense of humor and never knew a stranger. He loved God, his family, and his brothers in the Marine Corps. He is survived by his wife Linda; two daughters, Candi (Jeff Burns) and Michelle (Roberto Mendoza); granddaughter Susan Burns; two sisters, Bonnie (Jack Labbee) and Lila (Clint Leuning); and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ovila Joseph LaPlante and Etta Garis; brother Charles LaPlante and nephew William Kuehne. Colonial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
