Mass of Christian Burial for Jack B. Hazel, 79, of Mobridge was Saturday, January 11, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mobridge. Burial was in the Timber Lake Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge.
Jack passed away Monday, January 6, 2014 at Mobridge Regional Hospital. Jack was born on April 27, 1934 in Sioux City, IA to Jack and Ardith (Murray) Hazel. He joined the United States Army in 1956 and received his honorable discharge in 1958. Jack married Theresa Hulm on December 26, 1960 at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Timber Lake. Jack dedicated his life to the grocery business. In 1972 he moved to McLaughlin to manage the Standing Rock Red Owl Store. He was inducted into the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe as an honorary member. He moved to Mobridge in 1987 and purchased the Mobridge Red Owl Store, which he operated until 1990. He then purchased the former Gibson building and opened the Mobridge Food Center. Jack retired from the grocery business in 1993. He worked as a free-lance salesman for KOLY Radio and later for the Mobridge Tribune. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Mobridge, and was committed to his faith and his  deep love for God. Jack reminded people many times "walk your talk."
He loved Mustang cars, particularly convertibles. Jack is survived by his wife Theresa Hazel of Mobridge; children Theresa (Timothy) Cyr, Jack (Carol) Hazel, Jr., Mike (Geraldine) Hazel, all from the Houston, TX area; grandchildren John, Colin, Jacob, Adam and Ben Hazel; and one sister, Margaret (Donald) Knodel. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Dawn (Hazel) Locken. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Mobridge Ambulance Service at 1401 10th Ave. West, Mobridge, SD 57601. (Theresa Hazel’s address is 708 1st Ave. West, Mobridge, SD 57601.)
