Belva Frank

Funeral services for Belva Frank, 72, of Isabel and formerly of LaPlant were held Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at the HVJ Lakota Cultural Center in Eagle Butte. Burial was at the Black Hills National Cemetery at Sturgis under the direction of Stout Family Funeral Home of Mobridge. Belva entered the spirit world on February 1, 2014 in Pierre. Belva Dolores was born March 3, 1941 in Cannonball, ND to Isaac Charger and Mary Belva Kennedy. When Belva was quite young, her parents died in a car accident, and she was adopted and raised by Milton and Ada (Chase Alone) Summers. Belva was raised on the farm eight miles north of LaPlant and attended the Old Cheyenne Agency Boarding School. She married Phillip Clarence Charger in 1959, and to this union five children were born‚ Leonard Isaac, Jason Jeffrey, Cheryl Lynn, Mildred Mary and a son, Robert, who died in infancy. The family signed up for the relocation program and went to Chicago where Phillip went to automotive school, and then on to San Jose, CA. Belva worked as a chauffeur for a time there. The family moved back to the Cheyenne River Reservation in the 1970’s. In 1980, Belva married Mike Frank, Sr. in Isabel, and they made their home there. She worked for a number of years delivering mail to the rural area surrounding Isabel and retired in the late 1990’s. Belva enjoyed beading and reading, and also liked to bake. She was a Christian woman, and would help anyone in need, when she was able. She helped start Okiciyap, The Isabel Community (a helping organization). She was also an elderly mentor. Belva is survived by her only surviving child, Mildred “Midge” Charger of Portland, OR along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Those preceding Belva in death were her parents, Isaac Charger and Mary Kennedy; adopted parents, Milton and Ada Summers; children Leonard, Cheryl, Jason and Robert; siblings Clayton Summers, Sr., Maynard Summers, Sr., Milton Summers, Jr. and Edward Summers along with other extended family.
