Funeral services for Chauncey Iron Wing, 57, of Eagle Butte and formerly of White Horse were held Saturday, February 8, 2014 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in White Horse. Burial was at the church cemetery under the direction of Stout Family Funeral Home of Mobridge. Chauncey entered the spirit world February 1, 2014 in Eagle Butte. Chauncey Wade Iron Wing was born November 15, 1956 at Old Cheyenne Agency to Gilford and Pearl (Defender) Iron Wing. Chauncey was raised in White Horse, attending his early years of school there and later attending Eagle Butte Boarding School where he stayed in the dorms. Chauncey liked helping area ranchers do chores. He also enjoyed picking wild cherries, plums, currants and wild turnips and playing a little cards. In the winter, he’d help chop wood and haul water and loved to mess around with horses, even getting bucked off quite a few times, but he was learning. He also learned a lot by helping ranchers in White Horse and Promise, especially Debbie and Roman Ducheneaux. Chauncey, or Clance, as he was sometimes known, made his way to Springfield, MO to stay with his sister Marlene and her husband Gene Taber. He learned to work with concrete laying sidewalks and driveways. He also traveled to Fayetteville, TN with his Aunt Lucille Towry. In his later years, Chauncey resided in Eagle Butte where he had friends. He enjoyed sitting in the tribal office visiting and having coffee. Driving down Main Street, you’d often get a glimpse of Chauncey visiting or just walking. Those left to mourn his passing include his siblings, Gilford “Jughead” (Darla) Iron Wing and Renee Iron Wing of McLaughlin, Hazel (Andrew) Traversie and Carrie Iron Wing of White Horse; a daughter, Annie Nichols of Eagle Butte; grandchildren— Dayson Kennedy, Ava Pearman and the twins, Chance and Chase Bordeaux, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Chauncey was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Randolph James Ridley in infancy, and siblings, Robert, Morris and Marty Iron Wing, Georgianne Claymore and Debbie Ducheneaux.
