Mass of Christian Burial for Tom Herman, 73, of Timber Lake was Saturday, February 8, 2014 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Timber Lake with Fr. Brian Christensen and Fr. Dan Juelfs officiating. Burial was in the Timber Lake Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge Tom passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at Mobridge Regional Hospital. Tom was born June 30, 1940 at Mobridge to Alvin and Minerva (VanderMark) Herman. He attended Firesteel School, then St. Joseph's Catholic School and Timber Lake High School, graduating in 1958. Tom worked on the family farm, and helped on the neighbors’ farm and the coal mine during the winter months. In September, 1963 he joined the United States Army and was honorably discharged in September, 1965. On December 29, 1965 Tom married Clara Ann Scherr at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Timber Lake. On January 1, 1969 Tom and Clara purchased the service station from Art Hagen which became Herman's Service which he operated for 45 years and is still run by his sons, Bob and Tommy. Tom was a volunteer fireman, ambulance driver, an EMT, member and Commander of the American Legion, and remodeled the American Legion building into the Timber Lake clinic. He was a patrolman for the Timber Lake Police for several years, member of the Knights of Columbus (3rd and 4th degree), charter member of the Timber Lake and Area Historical Society, served on the Timber Lake Cemetery board, and was on the city council for a number of years. Tom is survived by his wife, Clara Ann of Timber Lake; three sons—Thomas and Robert, both of Timber Lake, and James of Watertown; four daughters— Kathy (Kelly) Maag of Watertown, Delores Herman of Denver, CO, Barbara Herman of Bismarck, ND, and Loretta (Bruce) Schmidt of Rapid City; eight grandchildren—Elizabeth, Alyson, Jacob, Connor, Trinity, Alyssa, Gabriel and Chloe; two brothers, Gerald Herman of Brigham City, UT, and Jay (Audrey) Herman of Mandan, ND; two sisters, Jane (Allen) Scheef of Racine, WI and Catherine (Dennis) Bresee of Moorhead, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister-in-law, Barbara Herman. Casket bearers were Bruce Maher, Stan Schlosser, Brad Haack, Lee Schlosser, Jim Boldt, Doug Maher and A.J. Lindskov. Lectors were Jane Scheef and Kathy Bresee. Elizabeth Herman and Alyssa Keller were gift bearers. The Knights of Columbus and the Gene Gelino American Legion Post provided honors.
