Funeral services for Marvin Henry Houston, Sr., 95, of Eagle Butte were held Friday, February 14, 2014 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Eagle Butte. Burial was in the Mossman Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Marvin passed away Saturday, February 8, 2014 at the Golden Living Center in Mobridge. Marvin H. Houston was born in Dewey County on August 8, 1918 to Susan Traversie and Jess Houston. His seven siblings were Dominic, Richard, Bill, Buddy, Stella, Henrietta, and Inez. He lived in this area most of his life and attended St. Joseph’s School in Chamberlain and Timber Lake High School. Marvin was married to Wanda Arpan, and from this union, two children were born, Bernard “Bernie” and Gwen. In 1950 he met and married Zenobia M. Pearman. Of this union two children and two step-children were united— Nina Jean, Marvin Henry, Charlie Anne and Sammie. Marvin worked for the Diamond A Ranch, the Pearman Ranch, Cheyenne River Housing Authority, CRST Telephone Authority, and Ganje’s Hardware. Marvin was a maintenance man who could fix just about anything. He later moved to Burnsville, MN. He loved wood working and made items such as doll cradles, potty chairs, end tables and numerous other items. He had a booth in a crafter’s store while living in Minnesota. He returned to South Dakota (God’s Country, as he stated) where he spent the last four years. Marvin was a World War II vet, serving in the Army for four years. After receiving an honorable discharge he returned home to South Dakota. Marvin loved all sports but was especially fond of baseball (the Atlanta Braves). He loved watching sports with his family. He loved hunting and fishing with anybody that was willing to go along. But more than anything he loved his family. He loved to tease and joke with anybody who would stick around long enough to listen. He is survived by his children—Marvin Henry (Pam) Houston, Jr., Nina J. (Joey) Houston-Fiddler, Charlie Anne (Fritz) Frost, Sammie (Sam) Dupris, and Gwen Houston; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Marvin is preceded in death by his parents, wife Zenobia Pearman-Houston, all of his siblings, and one son, Bernie.
