The McLaughlin Midgets captured the 2014 District 15B boys basketball championship last Friday with an impressive 80-61 victory over the Timber Lake Panthers. The Midgets advanced to the regional playoff (on March 11) while Timber Lake ended the season with an 11-12 overall record. While McLaughlin was a favorite to end up in the title matchup, the Panthers were somewhat of a surprise. After defeating Wakpala in the opening round of the tournament, Timber Lake battled its way into the finals by avenging two regular season losses to McIntosh with a 61-50 victory in semifinal play. The Midgets, meanwhile, cruised past Tiospaye Topa 93-43 in the semifinals to earn their championship game berth.
