Mass of Christian Burial for Magdalene "Maggie" Aberle, 91, of Glencross was held Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Timber Lake. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery at Mobridge under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Magdalene passed away Thursday, September 4, 2014 at Selby Good Samaritan Center in Selby. Maggie was born August 25, 1923 in Hague, ND to Anton and Magdalena (Keller) Hummel, the fourth of nine children. Maggie moved with her family to South Dakota and attended the Aberle School. She married Leo A. Aberle on October 16, 1945 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glencross. Leo and Maggie began their own farm and ranch operation in 1953 when they purchased land southeast of the Aberle family homestead. Maggie had a unique way with babies and she and Leo were blessed with 14 children of their own. Maggie had a love for all things living and raised many dogs, kittens, chickens, pigs, and baby calves throughout her life. In the morning and evening Maggie would be out in the milk barn tending to the milk cows. She was blessed with a green thumb and in her spare time could be found in her flower and large vegetable gardens. She was known for her homemade bread served daily and fried chicken for Sunday dinner.
Maggie enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren playing Chinese checkers, card games that she most often won, and coloring with her grandchildren at the kitchen table. Maggie was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Altar Society and later the Holy Cross Catholic Church and Altar Society in Timber Lake. Maggie is survived by her husband of 68 years, Leo A. Aberle of Glencross; children— Pauline Schmidt of Willow Lake, Louise (Robert) Lewis of Manila, AR, Janice (Leslie) Mandernach of Selby, Tom (Diana) Aberle of Glencross, John Aberle of Selby, Joel Aberle of Aberdeen, Mary (Dennis) Simons of St. Lawrence, Harvey Aberle of Billings, MT, Andy Aberle of Glencross, Irene (Wade) Moffat of Piedmont, OK, Jerry (Annie) Aberle of Clear Lake, Kenny (Criss) Aberle of Mobridge; daughters-in-law Lois Aberle of Mobridge and Carol Aberle of Aberdeen; one sister, Rose (Leo) Holzer of Mobridge; 23 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and seven siblings— Alice Aberle, Mary Keller, Catherine Leibel Prann, Victor Hummel, Jack Hummel, Joe Hummel, Nick Hummel; two sons, Leo J. Aberle and Art Aberle; and a son-in-law, Roger Schmidt.Casketbearers were Thomas Aberle, John Aberle, Joel Aberle, Harvey Aberle, Andrew Aberle, Gerald Aberle, and Kenneth Aberle.
