Funeral services for Eugene Schnabel, 84, of Isabel will be at 2 p.m. MT on Thursday, March 12, 2015 at Peace Lutheran Church in Isabel. Burial will be in the Hillview  Cemetery under the direction ofKesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Eugene passed away Friday, March 6, 2015 at Mobridge Regional  Hospital.Eugene "Gene" Ivan Schnabel was born August 18, 1930 in Ashley, ND, the eldest son of Helmuth and Inez (Brinkman) Schnabel.  After living in North Dakota fortwo years, the Schnabels moved to Isabel in 1932. They moved to the Firesteel area in 1934. Gene began grade school at the Liebelt Schooland later attended grade school in Firesteel. Gene was 11 years old when his next brother, Gerald, was born, and two years later another brother, Gary, joined the Schnabel family.  In August 29, 1950 Gene marriedLucille Pladsen in Pierre. To this union one child, Leland Eugene, was born. In 1964 they bought Lucille’s parents ranch and farmed and ranched and operated Eugene’s welding business until 1978 when they leased the ranch and moved to Isabel. Gene worked for the state highway department and later acquired his own welding and repair shop. He was a flex clerk for the postal service for 21 years and became the Isabel Postmaster in 1984. Gene was extremely proud to call  Isabel his home for almost the entiretyof his live. During his years in Isabel, Gene served in various capacities on the Isabel School Board and the Isabel City Board. He was a proud supporter of the Isabel Volunteer Fire  Department.At the time of his death, Gene and Lucille had been married for 64  years, 6 months, and 5 days. He waslooking forward to celebrating their  65th wedding anniversary.Gene is survived by his wife Lucille, and one son, Leland, of Houston, TX. Gene was preceded in death by his  parents, Helmuth and Inez Schnabel;one brother, Gary Schnabel; and one nephew,Wade Schnabel.(Lucille Schnabel’s address is PO Box 177, Isabel, SD 57633.)
