Teacher housing will be assessed for property taxes due in 2019

Before Dewey County Equalization Director Brandy Meier can put any school-owned property on the tax rolls, it will have to be assessed to ensure that it is taxed like similar properties.

The Dewey County Commission voted on November 7 to comply with a ruling by the State Office of Hearing Examiners and begin taxing property that schools rent to teachers. Such property had been previously been considered tax-exempt but the examiner ruled that rentals did not meet the tax exemption requirements outlined in state law.

Meier said the decision came too late in the tax cycle to make the change from non-taxable to taxable for the taxes payable in 2018. November 1 was the deadline to have property valuations calculated.
