It’s a cliche to say somebody had to lose, but it’s also the truth. Two teams desperately battled for a berth in the Class B State high school basketball tournament Thursday night in Ft. Pierre, but in the end it was the Timber Lake Panthers emerging with a 58-54 victory over the Herreid/Selby Wolverines in the Round of 16.

The lead changed after each quarter break in the first half and multiple times during a tense second half. Timber Lake led 43-42 at the start of the fourth quarter, but HSA had pulled ahead 49-48 with under four minutes to play. The Panthers, bolstered by a huge 3-pointer off an in bounds play by Jackson Harrison and key baskets and free throws by Brayden Pay Pay and Tucker Kraft, clung to the lead down the stretch.
