Austin Stover, a member of the Timber Lake Volunteer Fire Dept., is fighting fire in Colfax County, New Mexico, as part of a three-person team. Stover joined up with two firefighters from Interior, SD. When he spoke to the Topic they were fighting the Morris Creek Fire in 1600 acres of Rocky Mountain terrain, which Austin said is similar to the Black Hills. He said it had been windy and dry but then some rain helped slow down the fire, which was 60% contained. Because of the elevation (9000 feet) they are sometimes in the clouds.

“When the weather comes in, they make us stay on the road,” he said. “We do 14-hour day shifts and then come back to the base camp at the bottom of the mountain.”
