The funeral services for Hazel Kruse, 99, of Glad Valley were held September 7, 2018 at the Prince of Peace Chapel of the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon. Pastor Barb West officiated with the burial in Greenhill Cemetery at Lemmon.
Hazel Lorraine was born at home on September 4, 1918 in Cuba, IL to Snowden and Hatty (Johnson) Morgan. Hazel attended elementary and high school in Fulton County, IL. After graduation from high school she was employed at Carrps Department Store in Canton, IL.
During the summer of 1944, she and a girlfriend took the train out west to visit relatives who lived next to the Kruse homestead south of Lemmon. There she met her future husband, Marvin Kruse, who was working for her relatives.
Hazel and Marvin were married February 14, 1945 in Canton. They moved to Des Plaines, IL where they both were employed at Douglas Aircraft. In 1946, they returned to Lemmon and purchased a ranch a few miles north of Glad Valley with Marvin’s brother Edgar. They continued to enjoy their life together on the ranch and raised their son Stanley in this quiet and peaceful community.
In the summer of 1955 Hazel was offered her first teaching position at Twin Butte School in Corson County. There she developed a love for teaching first grade students to read and write. Hazel continued her education with night classes, correspondence courses and summer school at Black Hills State College in Spearfish. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Black Hills State College in 1974. Hazel continued teaching at rural schools in Corson and Harding counties for 18 years.
Hazel’s hobbies included crocheting, sewing and raising flowers. She also enjoyed travel, including a Carribean cruise on their 40th wedding anniversary. She and her husband spent several winters with their son in Honolulu, Hawaii.
After Marvin’s passing Hazel spent several winters with friends in Apache Junction, AZ and several winters with her son in Newport Beach, CA. After her son’s retirement, they moved back to the family ranch at Glad Valley where she continued to enjoy country life until her recent illness.
Hazel passed away August 30, 2018 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, ND with family and friends at her side after a brief battle with cancer.
Hazel is survived by her son Stanley of Glad Valley; sister-in-law Ruth Adams of Ft. Meade; nephews Ronald (Nick) Morgan and Gary Morgan; niece Connie Bergagna; and numerous nieces and nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Marvin, two brothers Marvin and Dwayne Morgan, sister Veda Conner and nephew Alan Conner.
Special music was provided by Marilyn Willey. Serving as casketbearers were Tony Gregory, Ronald Bierman, Chris Hulm, and Brett, G.P., and G.B. Pederson. Larry Barnica was an honorary casketbearer.
