Vernon Lyle (“Cheeto”) Mestes died December 6, 2018 at his home in Eagle Butte. He was born in Rapid City on September 23, 1928 to Carrie (Bridwell) and Frank Mestes. He lived with his parents in Rapid City, Pine Ridge, LaPlant, and Ash Creek until 1937 when he attended the Cheyenne River Boarding School at the Old Cheyenne Agency. He graduated in 1948 as the class valedictorian and captain of the boxing team. He worked on the Wally Knight Ranch and for local ranchers as a ranch hand.

He got the name Cheeto from Louie Knight after he rode a bronc by the same name.

His Lakota name is Sung Waste (Good Horse) given to him by Ruth Thunder Hoop in honor of her son who had passed. He always said, “I am just an Ikjeya Wicasa/Common Man,” but he was more than that.
