Shut down slows, halts government services

Federal government employees and the public they provide services to have been shut down for 25 days (as of Tuesday) as the result of a disagreement between the President and Congress about border security.

Locally, the agencies affected by the partial shutdown include the Bureau of Indian Affairs and some Department of Agriculture agencies.

Timber Lake School Supt. Dan Martin said the shutdown was not affecting day to day operations at the school but some work-arounds had been implemented, such as having CRST tribal officials rather than BIA officials sign impact aid documents. He said the food service (Child Nutrition Program) has funding available to continue operations into February. Federal employees who are furloughed or working without pay are eligible to apply for free and reduced price school meals for their children.
