Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Chairman Harold Frazier declared areas affected by flooding of the Cheyenne River as emergency areas. As of May 23, the Cheyenne River was 3 feet above flood stage. Flood stage is considered 17 feet and the river was at 20 feet. “The US Army Corps of Engineers has increased the flow from the dam to help decrease the back flow of water in the Cheyenne River,” Frazier said in a statement. “We are anticipating the river to continue to rise due to melting snows upriver and continued local rainfall all along the Cheyenne River watershed.” The CRST Emergency Command Center is in operation and can be reached at 964-6559 or 964-6558 with any questions or calls for assistance. If there is a life-threatening emergency call 911.
