Lloyd Andrew Kjellsen was born February 10, 1934 on the family farm outside of Badger, one of 13 children born to Albeck and Marie (Pedersen) Kjellsen. He attended country schools until starting high school in Hetland, the year that school was closed. He participated in basketball and football and graduated from Lake Preston High School in 1952. After high school he served in the Army for two years and was stationed in New York City for 18 months. He went to all the baseball games he could, and by wearing his uniform, he went free of charge.

Lloyd and Janice Olsen were married when he came home from basic training in 1954. They were parents of two girls, Valerie and Cheryl. Lloyd and Janice were later divorced.

Lloyd enrolled in Huron College, graduated in 1960 and taught one year in Piedmont. That school closed and he moved to Timber Lake to teach and coach in high school. He said, “I taught for ten years and was a pretty successful football coach. I only had one bad year.”

In 1971, Lloyd and Patricia Humann Gunderson were married. He liked to tell that he got married on Saturday and bought a grocery and general merchandise store on Sunday. He later adopted Pat's son Mike. They ran the store for 26 years before retiring.
