An accident that occurred south of Timber Lake last Thursday, July 25 is being investigated by local and federal law enforcement.

Tommie Mettler, 47, of Timber Lake was struck by a pickup as she was walking on the county road about a half mile south of the airport early that morning. Dewey County Sheriff Les Mayer identified the driver as 29-year-old Frank Chapman of Bullhead, who was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol (DUI).

Mayer said federal authorities are also investigating and federal charges are “probably pending” because, although Chapman is not a tribal member, the victim, who sustained serious injuries, is.

Mayer said both the vehicle and Mettler were headed south when the driver apparently became distracted and failed to see Mettler on the road. When his passengers yelled at him that someone was on the road, he swerved to the left, hit Mettler, and went into the east ditch.

The victim was struck by the right rear fender flare of the one-ton pickup and thrown into the west ditch.
