What started out as an idea to bring residents of area communities together for friendship and fellowship has grown into a much-anticipated Christmas tradition that will be celebrated next weekend in Isabel and Timber Lake.

The 15th annual Christmas Cantata will be performed Saturday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. at the Isabel Baptist Church, and Sunday, Dec. 8, at 3 p.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Timber Lake. Admission to the performances is free, however, freewill offerings will be accepted.

Jane Stradinger of Isabel is credited with helping get the Christmas Cantata off the ground. At the time, the communities of Isabel, Timber Lake and Dupree had received grant funding through the South Dakota Horizons Project to be used for economic development and community improvement. A brunt of those funds were used to develop daycare facilities in each community and the remainder could be used for other projects.

Stradinger and her circle of friends at Isabel Baptist Church often talked about developing a program that might help bridge some of the gaps between the three communities.
