School responds to questions on Native American position

The hiring of a Native American Education Coordinator/Teacher, or lack thereof, was a matter of discussion at the Timber Lake School Board meeting last Wednesday when a district patron, Matt Vogel of Timber Lake, questioned the board’s efforts toward filling the newly-created position.

After several months of working with the Native American Education Committee (NAEC), the school board voted in September to create the new position in an effort to bring more Native American culture, cultural understanding and cultural activities to both Native and non-Native students. While that measure was initially celebrated as a step forward for the district, it has since been the target of criticism by NAEC members over the job title, job description, and requirements for the position being set forth by school officials.
