Discussion to include new American Legion membership eligibility under LEGION Act

South Dakota American Legion State Veteran Service Officer Courtney VanZanten and other state American Legion officials will be on hand at a veteran’s informational meeting Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 6 p.m. MT in the Isabel Senior Citizens Center. The meeting is open to veterans as well as their families and friends.

VanZanten will discuss the latest changes in veteran benefits, medical care and claims processing, as well as new membership eligibility rules under the LEGION Act. Joining VanZanten for a period of questions and answers and one-on-one discussions will be South Dakota American Legion State Vice Commander Kevin Morello, District 1 Commander David Booze, and Dewey County/ CRST Veteran Service Officer Robert Dunsmore.

Booze said he expects quite a bit of discussion to center around the LEGION Act (Let Everyone Get Involved in Opportunities for National Service Act), which was signed by President Donald Trump on July 30 and opened up the eligibility requirements for the American Legion. The American Legion’s eligibility criteria immediately changed from seven war eras to two: April 6, 1917, to Nov. 11, 1918, and Dec. 7, 1941 to a time later determined by the federal government. Thus, veterans who were honorably discharged but whose service did not fall into the previous defined war eras may now join the American Legion.
