The writer’s COVID-19 test was quick and painless.

Reporter’s first-hand experience being checked for coronavirus

COVID-19 tests aren’t just for the sick anymore. Nearly three months after the Centers for Disease Control officially declared a nation-wide novel coronavirus pandemic, you no longer have to show symptoms of the deadly flu to warrant a test for it.

So when the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe announced it would conduct mass drive-up testing at the Eagle Butte Unit of the Indian Health Service last Thursday, June 4, I decided to give it a whirl. Short of irritated eyes and a runny nose that I attribute to allergies that usually bother me in the spring, I wasn’t feeling sick or exposed to the virus, but since it was free-of-charge and I was in Eagle Butte on business anyway, why not find out if I’m carrying the virus without even knowing it?
