A CHILD OF THE VILLAGE

Marijo was born to Harold and Johanna (Lawien) Bornong on March 8, 1951 in Mobridge, the last of six children, and the only girl. Marijo was graced with a simple innocence that touched the hearts of everyone who came to know her.

Marijo was raised in Firesteel and attended the Firesteel School, going on to graduate from Black Hills Works in Rapid City. In her early years, Marijo loved riding with her father while he delivered the mail as a rural route carrier for the US Postal Service. She also spent many hours assisting her Uncle Fritz Lawien at his store and playing in her playhouse decorated by her mother with curtains, teacups and baby dolls. She had a passion for swinging and could often be found at the Firesteel School playground. Marijo received a bicycle from one of her brothers and because he bought it in Nebraska, she named her bike “Nebraska.”
