Hutchinson, Rickels remembered

Gerald Herman of Brigham City, UT and formerly of Timber Lake recently visited the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, DC and located the names of two Timber Lake young men who lost their lives in that conflict.

Randolph Scott Hutchinson (US Marines) died December 30, 1966 and David Lee Rickels (US Army) died February 3, 1968).

Timber Lake, Isabel honor service and sacrifice

Kelly Bollinger (CENTER, FRONT) of Timber Lake was the guest speaker at the Memorial Day program at Timber Lake. Kelly spoke about his eight years in the US Air Force, where part of his duty was transporting remains of casualties.

Voters go to the polls next Tuesday

South Dakota voters will go to the polls next Tuesday, June 5 to choose Democrat and Republican nominees for the November general election.

What’s different about this year’s election is that there will also be a ballot measure decided, something that is usually done in the November general election. The issue is an amendment to the Constitution which was passed by a statewide vote in 2016.

Dewey County has four different ballots: one for Republicans, one for Democrats in Commissioner District 1, a different one for Democrats outside District 1, and one for people of neither party.

Elsie wins award at ISEF

Elsie DuBray received a fourth place award at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Pittsburgh last week with her project: Buffalo vs. Beef: Analyzing Lipid Content in Search of Potential Health Benefits (Phase III). She won the trip to ISEF by placing first at the High Plains Regional Science Fair at the S.D. School of Mines in Rapid City last month. The recent TLHS grad will be attending Stanford University in California this fall, where she intends to continue her research on the subject.

Mayor explains resignation

Timber Lake Mayor Clyde Pfeifle told the Topic this week that his decision to step down from the post was not due to any particular thing but rather a lot of different things. Pfeifle had not filed a petition for the office and announced as he left the May 7 city council meeting that he would not accept an appointment. He left a brief handwritten note to that effect and the council accepted his resignation.

Isabel town board reorganizes

The Isabel Town Board reorganized at their regular meeting on Monday, May 7.

Trustees were sworn in simultaneously with Bridget Russell then named to stay as board chair and Peg Ley as vice-chair. Other designations were as follows:

Finance Officer: Janet Kuivenhoven Utilities & Maintenance: Larry Simpson

Graduation 2018

The Timber Lake School and community celebrated graduation for 22 seniors and 26 eighth graders who received diplomas on Sunday, May 13. Heidi Ducheneaux, outgoing school board president, and Supt. Dan Martin presented the diplomas.

Locken appointed to school board

At a special meeting on May 9, the Timber Lake School Board appointed Joe Locken to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Heidi Ducheneaux.

The board had advertised for people to apply for the position with a deadline of May 2. Only two people applied and the board interviewed Locken and Tyrone Kraft before making the decision. The appointment is for the remainder of Ducheneaux’s term, which ends in July, 2019.

CRST Council meets

The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Council held their May regular session in Timber Lake Tuesday - Thursday last week and finishing up on Monday, May 5. As far as anyone could verify, this was the first time the tribal council had ever met in Timber Lake, which made it a historic occasion worthy of a group photo.
