Report Card shows statewide, local school performance

The 2017 Report Card released by the S.D. Department of Education last week, uses several indicators to measure how schools are performing.

“With the advent of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), states have the opportunity to broaden the measures they use to review school performance,” said Laura Scheibe, deputy director of accountability systems for the Department of Education. “In South Dakota, we are working toward an accountability system that supports our aspiration that all students leave the K-12 system college, career and life ready.”

School board hears from Native American parents

Jon Bigger and Rhonda Swan addressed Native American student issues at the Timber Lake School Board’s Sept. 13 special community input meeting.

Bigger, representing the Native American Education Committee, reported on the committee’s Sept. 6 meeting, where members reviewed a list of the school district’s accomplishments in Lakota culture and data on Native American student participation in extra-curricular activities presented by Supt. Dan Martin.

Isabel board puts $ in budget for law enforcement

The Isabel town board, facing a sales tax revenue shortfall and a budget that is tough to balance, decided at a special meeting Monday night to pledge $6200 to local law enforcement in the 2018 budget.

The board will divert $5,000 from planned upgrade of the city municipal building to give to Dewey County for the Sheriff’s budget. In addition, the operating agreement for Sparky’s Bar and Grill has been amended to include an extra $100 per month. This extra $1,200 per year will be earmarked for the law enforcement fund.

Fires banned in Dewey County

The Dewey County Commission is continuing its ban on open burning in the county due to dry conditions.

Emergency Manager Ted Schweitzer and the Dewey County Commissioners decided at the Sept. 5 meeting not to lift the burn ban.

Farlee buying Webb’s business

Sale of Advance Wireless has council in a quandry

At its September meeting Monday night, the Timber Lake City Council and Timber Lake Broadband CEO Ryan Farlee discussed what their relationship might be after Farlee purchases Advance Wireless from Butch Webb.

Farlee told the council he has a handshake agreement with Webb to take over Advance Wireless October 1. “Obviously that will affect our relationship,” he said.

Customers looking for options for internet service

The announcement that Advance Wireless is discontinuing its internet service in the Timber Lake area has some customers shopping for alternatives.

The City of Timber Lake declined the offer to purchase Advance Wireless for $100,000 and instead is talking about borrowing $60,000 to make improvements to the cityowned Timber Lake Broadband (TLB).

Big cabbage

Charlie, 16-month-old son of Kayla Boysen, is pretty excited about the 8.8 pound cabbage his mom picked from the family’s garden near Firesteel. Charlie weighed 9 pounds, 14 ounces when he was born
