Welcome rains turn Isabel rodeo into muddy affair

The Isabel Rodeo started off ordinary enough with moderate weather, but things took a turn Saturday evening when about 2 inches of rain fell down in a 30 minute torrent that delayed the competition. When the rodeo did resume, arena conditions were less than ideal as it was from then on a slog through the mud to finish Saturday night. It was just as muddy for the Sunday morning slack and the Sunday night performance. While the conditions were less than ideal strictly from a rodeo sense, nobody was cursing the rain, as it was much-needed.

This year’s clown act was PRCA regular act “Backflip” Johnny Dudley of Texas, who bragged that he had brought the rain with him. Local circuit pickup man and rodeo competitor JJ Hunt responded that next year, Dudley should come back in May.

The Isabel board hired Janet Kuivenhoven last month after VanDeventer had told the board of her plans to step down from the job.

Kuivenhoven lives in Firesteel and operates her bookkeeping business out of Isabel. She has been working mornings at the town office to be “shown the ropes” by VanDeventer.

Extremely dry

The prairie should not be this brown and the water holes should not be this small this time of year but the area is in a period of extreme drought.
