USPS continues to reduce rural Post Office hours

By Karen Holzer
Only a short time ago, a drive up Main Street in any small town would find you beneath a US flag billowing in the wind, marking the location of the community’s post office. Winds of change have swept over the countryside, however, and
with it, the changing role of the main street post office. As the United States became settled and towns were established,
post offices were a vital component of the official status of the community. Paperwork was sent to Washington, DC for approval to name the town and designate a postmaster. Local landmarks and the longitude and latitude of its location defined the town and placed it on maps. The town would then have mail delivered by the United States Post Office to
residents.

Dewey, Ziebach among last to adopt 911 addressing

By Karen Holzer

It is happening. A resident has lived at and received mail at RR 2, Box 98, and suddenly, without moving, he finds himself at 12812 303rd Ave. Rural mail customers in Dewey County may have received mail at a Rural Route or Highway Contract Route address for decades. Now they will be required to use physical locations designated by 911 addressing. Recently, residents in Dewey County have received notification of their physical addresses which will be used for emergency dispatch by fire departments, ambulances, and law enforcement. The US Postal Service, along with UPS, FedEx and other delivery services, will be using those addresses to deliver mail and packages.
