Civil Air Patrol cadets aid in search for Fr. Peter Kovarik

Founded on Dec. 1, 1941 — six days before Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor — the Civil Air Patrol played an integral role in protecting the homefront from Axis threats during World War II. After the war, the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) was established as an auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, dedicated to emergency air response services, providing aerospace education, and nurturing the nation’s fledgling pilots through cadet programs.

Dewey County Commission holds end-of-year meeting

Meeting on Tuesday, December 30, the Dewey County Commission moved $30,000 from the contingency fund to other funds to cover final expenditures for 2014. The biggest overrun was in the building fund, due to new flooring installed in the north side of the courthouse.

City has clean financial audit for 2013

A financial audit of the City of Timber Lake for the year 2013 showed no findings or recommendations, according to a report by the auditors, ELO, Certified Public Accountants of Mitchell. The report was distributed to council members at their December 8 meeting.

School district will buy another Governor’s House

The Timber Lake School Board voted Monday night to approve a plan to purchase a three-bedroom Governor’s House. Supt. Jarod Larson reiterated his opinion that it should not be the district’s responsibility to provide housing but it will be a useful tool in recruiting an elementary principal

Dewey County will listen to regional jail proposal

After attending a meeting in Selby on November 20, Dewey County Sheriff Les Mayer is not sure a regional jail there would solve this county’s problems. In an interview with the Topic on Monday, he said it would make his job a whole lot easier if he could take most of his prisoners to a new Walworth County facility in Selby but he doesn’t know if it will cost any less than what the county is spending now.
