County commission hears report on roads

Dewey County is filing an application for federal assistance to help repair flooded county roads. County Highway Supt. Tom Hermes, meeting with the Dewey County Commissioners on Tuesday, said he has identified 169 sites on 35 roads that were damaged.

Firesteel Creek: From ripples to raging

This June 1953 picture shows the Firesteel Creek looking more like a lake. The original bridge spanning the creek was located in the upper right hand corner of the picture before it was swept down the creek. In places the creek overflowed a half mile wide.

An intense cloudburst inundated much of west river South Dakota with torrents of floodwater early in the afternoon on June 18. In our part of the country, the resulting run-off may be the most water that’s come down the Firesteel Creek since the legendary flood in June of 1953.

Ducheneaux Reunion

A reunion of the Tuffy and Mary Ducheneaux family was held at The Bay west of Mobridge on June 20 and 21. An estimated 170 people attended, with 12 campers and a few tents, boats, fishing poles and jet skis.

Luke Crance receives award

Luke Crance received the Superior Cadet Award which is awarded to one person in each ROTC class. It was presented at the ROTC Military Ball in Vermillion where he attends the University of South Dakota while serving in the South Dakota National Guard. Crance left this week for West Point Military Academy where her will take cadet field training from June 30 - July 26.

County requests disaster declaration

In a special teleconference meeting on June 26 the Dewey County Commission passed a resolution seeking a disaster declaration from the Governor. Highway Supt. Tom Hermes estimated the cost to repair roads and culverts damaged by recent flooding at more than $100,000, just for the gravel.

Elderly nutrition program seeking new location

The Timber Lake Senior Citizens aren’t quite ready to pull the plug on the senior meals program. The group came up with some ideas Monday evening at a meeting with Marcia Murray and George Larson of Western South Dakota Senior Services, which operates the elderly nutrition program in 13 communities. Lois Bartlett, president of the Timber Lake Senior Citizens, chaired the meeting. Ray Lenk of the Dupree Senior Citizens and Willard Nash of the Isabel Senior Citizens took part in the discussion, along with half a dozen local seniors.

On Monday, the Timber Lake School Board toured the new Governor’s House, one of two which are being rented to teachers. The homes were purchased by the Timber lake School District and are managed by the Timber Lake & Area Development Corporation.

Dewey County expresses interest in new attorney

The Dewey County Commission has taken the first step toward recruiting an attorney to practice law in the county. The commissioners discussed the Recruitment Assistance Pilot Program with Wayne Venhuizen of the Unified Judicial System (UJS) at their June 5 meeting.
