Celebration next week

Timber Lake’s Days of 1910 Celebration is just a week away. Johny Weber, who heads up the parade committee, reminds everyone that the parade has a new time slot this year: 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, July 26. The parade theme is South Dakota’s 100 Years of Statehood.

Aimee Quinn-Copas earns Doctorate in Education at USD

Aimee Quinn-Copas, daughter of Frank and Donna Quinn of Timber Lake, recently graduated from the University of South Dakota with a Doctorate degree in Education with a specialization in School District Administration. Copas serves as the Executive Director for the North Dakota Council of Educational Leaders, an umbrella organization that serves and represents all educational administrators in North Dakota including superintendents, principals, technology leaders, special education directors, business officials, athletic directors, and vocational directors among others.

Fraser Harrison, a travel writer from England, spent the summer of 2013 in Yankton. An essay on his impressions is featured in the current South Dakota History magazine, published by the State Historical Society. Harrison calls it a love letter to Yankton. But it was not love at first sight. The 2013 visit was not our English friend’s first time in Yankton. He visited several South Dakota towns in 2011 for his book Infinite West: Travels in South Dakota.

Pat Aberle appointed to seat on school board

The Timber Lake School Board appointed Pat Aberle to fill the vacant seat on the board Monday night and elected Chad Mettler chairman. Heidi Ducheneaux took the oath of office after running unopposed for the seat formerly held by Cherie Leibel, who did not seek reelection.

Council approves use of Community Center for senior meals program

The Timber Lake City Council, meeting on Wednesday, July 9, gave approval for use of the Community Center for the senior meals program. Lois Bartlett and Esther Goldade told the council the seniors cannot afford to continue operating their building and will be offering it for sale by bids.

County commission hears report on roads

Dewey County is filing an application for federal assistance to help repair flooded county roads. County Highway Supt. Tom Hermes, meeting with the Dewey County Commissioners on Tuesday, said he has identified 169 sites on 35 roads that were damaged.
