Senior Citizens may quit meals program

The Timber Lake Senior Citizens organization is considering terminating the local elderly nutrition program. With only 6 to 8 participants per day, the cost of maintaining their building is becoming prohibitive. The group met last week and decided to have a community meeting on Monday, June 30 to seek input from the public. The meeting will be held at the Senior Center at 7:30 p.m.

Democrat voters choose Rod Enright, Dean Schrempp

Rod Enright defeated Laura Ward by two votes in Tuesday’s Democratic primary election for the District 2 seat on the Dewey County Commission. Enright tallied 67 votes to Ward’s 65. Enright led in Trail City, Timber Lake and Glencross. Ward had more votes in White Horse and Promise precincts.

Remodeling

Carol Stoudt, Martin Biegler, Dave Stoudt were at work this past week on the office remodeling at the Timber Lake & Area Museum. Here they fit an old window from the Holy Spirit Chapel (Old Stone Church) into a new wall that will create an office space in the south of the front gallery.

Dewey County 4-Hers worked on projects to exhibit at the Dewey County Fair at Project Day on May 30. Parents and volunteers helped the kids.

Street repair

Jensen Rock and Sand of Mobridge did some repair work and laid a new surface on the street north of the Timber Lake School. The school district contributed part of the cost to the City of Timber Lake because the street was damaged during the school construction.

City council considering purchase of cable TV system

The Timber Lake City Council met with representatives of West River Cable TV Monday night to discuss the sale of the local cable system. Reed Metzger and Lyle Reiff of WRCTV of Bison said the Timber Lake system is no longer profitable for their company, a subsidiary of the electric and telephone cooperative at Bison, to operate. Metzger said they had decided to offer it for sale first to the City of Timber Lake.

Elder contracts Legionnaire’s Disease at Colorado swimming pool

Allan Elder of Aurora, CO and formerly of Timber Lake, is one of two people who contracted Legionnaire’s Disease after using the swimming pool and hot tub at Bally’s gym in Aurora. Elder spent six days in the hospital after being diagnosed with the sometimes fatal bacterial disease in April. He told the Topic on Tuesday that he is feeling stronger every day but it will be about five more months before he will be fully recovered. He said he worked out three or four times a week at Bally’s, which has been closed by health department authorities.

Elizabeth Sudmeier received the Intelligence Medal of Merit in 1962 for her clandestine work for the Central Intelligence Agency.

When Elizabeth Sudmeier died in April, 1989, her role as an undercover agent for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) remained a secret. It was not until recently that information about her work as a clandestine agent was declassified. Today, 25 years after her death, some of the details remain classified.

At the Memorial Day program in Timber Lake on Monday, Kasey Bickel, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, encouraged her audience to live their lives like soldiers — to face challenges with courage. Bickel, who has attended Memorial Day services almost every year of her life, said she had often thought about what she would say if she had the opportunity.
