Senate candidates debate issues at newspaper event

Five Republicans hoping to emerge from the June 3 primary election as the candidate to beat in the U.S. Senate election this fall participated in a debate sponsored by South Dakota Newspaper Association April 12 in Pierre. The debate, the first among all five GOP candidates this spring, was held in conjunction with SDNA’s 132nd annual state convention.

Changes in teaching staff underway at Timber Lake School

Several changes in the teaching staff were approved by the Timber Lake School Board Monday night as resignations were accepted and contracts were offered for the 2014-2015 school year. Krista McCorkle, who teaches first grade, resigned to accept a position in Aberdeen. Sarah Johnson, high school English teacher, will be leaving to accept a position in the Lead-Deadwood School. Rachael Pederson from Eagan, MN was hired to replace Johnson.

The cast of the Timber Lake High School spring play, “The Wedding Singer,” was doing a “not quite dress” rehearsal on Sunday evening. Shown at the wedding reception (ABOVE) are the bride and groom, Donatella and Shane, played by Kenidee Keller and Ben Beyer, and George (Kadem Huber), a member of the band. The play will be performed Thursday, Friday and Sunday evenings.

Getting a face lift

The Days of 1910 building is getting a face lift. The wood siding is being replaced with steel siding and brick trim, similar to the Moreau-Grand warehouse on Main Street. The Timber Lake Rodeo Association is funding the project. Martin Biegler’s crew is doing the remodeling.

The high school rodeo season is about to begin. The first high school practice rodeos will be in Kadoka and Burke (Triple Crown) on May 2 and 3, followed by Eagle Butte on May 9 and Lemmon on May 10. The Timber Lake High School Rodeo will be on Saturday, May 17. Council hires Goldsmith for street project

The Timber Lake City Council voted Monday night to hire Todd Goldsmith of Mobridge to do the engineering for the upcoming street project. The city was awarded a SD Department of Transportation grant for improving Eighth Street (from the Courthouse to Airport Road) and E Street (from Highway 20 to Holy Cross Church). The plans that Goldsmith develops will have to be approved by the DOT before the project can be advertised for bids.

County commission/equalization board meets

The Dewey County Equalization Board met during the county commission meeting on Tuesday. Charlie Shupick of Eagle Butte talked to the board about the need for a reappraisal of properties in Eagle Butte. He said the City of Eagle Butte wants the appraisals to be fair and equitable and is willing to work with the county to get it done.

Before the storm

This little Charolais calf (one of Patrick Maher’s) was moved closer to shelter on Sunday, in anticipation of the incoming blizzard, so he was enjoying a few final hours of warm spring weather before the wind and snow hit. Because of the blizzard warning, most ranchers had time to get their cows and calves to shelter.
