Ella “Tomi” Tomlin

Ella Belle "Tomi" Tomlin, 93, of Portland, OR died November 30, 2018, surrounded by her family. There was a funeral Mass for her on December 18, 2018 at St. Ignatius Church.

Ella Belle was born April 30, 1925 in Timber Lake to Chauncey and Edith Johnson. She was a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe.

As a girl she woke early to tend to the cattle and horses on the ranch. At 16, she moved to Seattle, WA to pursue a nursing career. She lived with her Aunt Evelyn, her mother’s sister, so she could train at St. Mary’s Hospital, beginning a long nursing career. She nursed injured World War II soldiers.

Walter “Wally” Grage

Mass of Christian Burial for Wally Grage, 65, of Timber Lake was held Monday, December 31, 2018 at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Timber Lake. Burial was in the Timber Lake Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge.

He passed away December 26, 2018 at his home in Timber Lake.

Walter “Wally” Frank Grage Jr. was born on April 24, 1953 to Walter and Phyllis (Biegler) Grage in Mobridge, the third of eight children.

Quinn Marie Kougl

Quinn “Twinkles” Marie Kougl was born on November 11, 2015 to William and Justine Kougl of Busby, MT and formerly of Timber Lake, joining sister Nora and brother Cody. She was born with Treacher Collins Syndrome (TCS) which was both a blessing and a curse. Never a day went by without concern over her airway and health due to TCS. This airway issue caused a multitude of surgeries, and blocked her airway completely and she was unable to be saved despite the best efforts of her parents, ambulance and flight crew. She left this earth on December 17, 2018 at the age of 3.

Lanny La Plante

Lanny W. LaPlante, 78, of Eagle Butte passed away Monday, December 17, 2018 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held Saturday, December 29, 2018 at the CRST Bingo Hall in Eagle Butte. Mother Margaret Watson presided.

Lanny Wayne Blue Coat was born in a log cabin on May 30, 1940 at White Horse to Elaine Miner and Robert “Archie” Blue Coat.

Bruce William Gunderson

Reverend Bruce William Gunderson, 70, of Fergus Falls, MN died Sunday, December 16, 2018 at his home.

He was born on November 17, 1948 in Williston, ND to Arthur William and Mary Louise (McCabe) Gunderson. He attended Wilcox Country School and in 1966 graduated from Watford City (ND) High School. He furthered his education at Bismarck State College and Dickinson State University, graduating with a B.S. in Education, and a B.S. in Biblical Studies from Northwest Bible College in Minot, ND.

On December 27, 1968, Bruce married his high school sweetheart, Patricia (Patti) Skaar, of Watford City. He held a variety of jobs in these early years including farming, construction and managing a lumberyard.

Vernon “Cheeto” Lyle Mestes

Vernon Lyle (“Cheeto”) Mestes died December 6, 2018 at his home in Eagle Butte. He was born in Rapid City on September 23, 1928 to Carrie (Bridwell) and Frank Mestes. He lived with his parents in Rapid City, Pine Ridge, LaPlant, and Ash Creek until 1937 when he attended the Cheyenne River Boarding School at the Old Cheyenne Agency. He graduated in 1948 as the class valedictorian and captain of the boxing team. He worked on the Wally Knight Ranch and for local ranchers as a ranch hand.

He got the name Cheeto from Louie Knight after he rode a bronc by the same name.

His Lakota name is Sung Waste (Good Horse) given to him by Ruth Thunder Hoop in honor of her son who had passed. He always said, “I am just an Ikjeya Wicasa/Common Man,” but he was more than that.

Wade Patrick Keller

Mass of Christian Burial for Wade Keller, 47, of Mobridge was Saturday, December 22, 2018 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Trail City. Interment was in the Trail City Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge.

Wade passed away December 17, 2018 at Mobridge Regional Hospital after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Wade was born September 2,1971 in McLaughlin to Joseph and Barbara (Travis) Keller of Trail City, the sixth of ten children. He was raised on a dairy farm west of Trail City.

Barbara Mae Frankfurth

Barbara Mae Frankfurth was born in Dempster, SD on July 22, 1934 and passed away December 23, 2018 due to COPD and dementia.

Barbara and her family moved to Dupree in 1943 and she graduated from Dupree High School in 1952 and entered the U.S. Marines in 1957.

After discharge in 1960 she lived in Rapid City and later resided in Sioux Falls for the remainder of her life.

Wayne Herbert Lesmeister

Wayne Lesmeister, 66, of Belle Fourche died Saturday, December 22, 2018 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial was Friday, December 28, 2018 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Belle Fourche. Leverington Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche was in charge of arrangements.

Wayne Herbert Lesmeister was born December 1, 1952 in Pierre, the son of Herbert and Dorothy (Kearns) Lesmeister. Wayne grew up in Ridgeview and graduated from high school in Gettysburg in 1971. Shortly after graduation, he entered the U.S. Army and later the National Guard. Following his time in the service he came back home to Ridgeview and in 1977 he was married to Jean Marie Heidler in Faith. He lived in Ridgeview for a time and then moved to Broadus, MT, where he ranched for several years. In 1980 he moved to Newell, where he ranched for about ten years before settling in Belle Fourche.
