Alvin “Bud” Springer

Alvin “Bud” Springer was born in Murdo on November 29, 1922. His mother, Nora Perron Springer, died at his birth, so Bud and his three siblings – Art Springer, Evie (Kossow) and Maddie (Schaefer) – were cared for by their Aunt Alice and Uncle Wesley Smith. At age two, Bud and the others moved in with his grandfather, Richard Springer, for five years. They then moved to Timber Lake. He moved in with his father, Charlie Springer, as a teenager. His stepmother Lena Kessler, stepsisters Norma Little and Hazel Pendell, and half-sister Nila Robbins joined his family when he was a young adult.

Bud married his sweetheart, Alvina Schlecht, on April Fools’ Day, 1943. They had three children: Gerrie (Dick) Peterson, Penny (Frank) Savage, and Rick Springer.

They moved to Seattle in 1945.

Lyle Maynard

Lyle Maynard, 80, of Eagle Butte peacefully passed away Thursday, January 31, 2019 at the Medicine Wheel Village in Eagle Butte.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, February 8, 2019 at the United Church of Christ in Eagle Butte with Pastor Pauline Webb presiding. Burial will follow in the Eagle Butte Cemetery. A wake service will be held at 7 p.m. MT on Thursday, February 7 at the church with visitation one hour prior.

Lyle Maynard was born July 28, 1938 in Dupree to Edwin and Eulalah (Carter) Maynard.

Gerald “Jerry” Miller

Gerald “Jerry” H. Miller, 83, of Mitchell, NE passed away on January 31, 2019 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, NE. His funeral service was held on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at Harvest Valley Church in Scottsbluff with Elder Larry Massey officiating. Burial followed at the Mitchell City Cemetery.

Jerry was born August 29, 1935 to Charley and Ina (Wiese) Miller in Firesteel. He attended elementary school there and graduated from Isabel High School in 1953.

He farmed until 1954 when he moved to Sidney, NE and worked in the oil fields. He returned to South Dakota in early 1955, working for International Harvester Company. Later that year, he returned to Sidney and continued working for International Harvester until 1959.

Eleanor Clown

Funeral services for Eleanor Clown, 50, of Eagle Butte, were held Saturday, January 26, 2019 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Eagle Butte. Officiants were Mother Margaret Watson, Reverend Richard Charging Eagle, Harold Condon, and Helene Circle Eagle. Burial was in the Eagle Butte City Cemetery under direction of the First Nations-Oster Funeral Home of Mobridge.

Bernard F. Jensen

Bernard F. Jensen passed away January 8, 2019 at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center in Cheyenne, WY.

Bernie was born in Timber Lake to Orlo and LaVern Jensen on February 18, 1930. He graduated from Timber Lake High School in 1948.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, JoAnn; two sons Daniel (Fatima) Jensen of California and Anthony (Elizabeth) Jensen of Washington; two daughters, Angie (Rob) Helton of Wyoming and Debbie (Paul) Jankard of South Dakota; brother, Orlo Jensen of Montana; sister Muriel Slater of Texas; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Anne (Arpan) Peterson

Dorothy Anne Peterson, 92, of Gillette, WY, died Monday, January 7, 2019 in Gillette.

Dorothy was born in Newell on June 5, 1926 to George C. and Hazel (Gadsden) Arpan. In her youth, she lived at Hoover, where she got to spend a great deal of time with her favorite aunt, Alice Hoover, and cousin, Don Hoover, riding horses, hiking the prairies, and loving animals. She moved into Newell, where she graduated from high school in 1944.

Dorothy met the love of her life at a dance in Belle Fourche and married Edward A. Nash in 1950. Together they had three children— Sandy, Gary, and Deb.

Edward died in an accident in Homestake Mine in November 1963, leaving her a young widow with three children to raise. She was Whitewood town auditor for many years, and then worked at Wingspread (Sky Ranch for boys) in Sturgis as a secretary until she retired.

David “Bud Jr.” Dupris (Pa Tanka - Big Head)

The funeral service for David “Bud Jr.” Dupris, 39, of Green Grass was held Monday, January 21, 2019 at the Cheyenne River Hall in Eagle Butte. Reverend Gerald Yellow Hawk, Minister Helene Circle Eagle, and Pastor Moses Havo officiated. Cremation and burial will be at a later date under the direction of the First Nations-Oster Funeral Home of Mobridge.

David Dupris, Jr. (“Baby Boo”) entered the Spirit World on January 14, 2019 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls with his wife Colette and his sister Nancy by his side.

He was born on September 27, 1979 to Veltina (White Dog) and David R. Dupris Sr. (“Buddy Boo”) in Eagle Butte. “Baby Boo” was the younger sibling of Joseph Gilbert and Nancy Ann.

He grew up on the Moreau River in the community of Green Grass. He attended school at Cheyenne-Eagle Butte, graduating in 1998.

David Jr. “Bud” Dupris, age 39

Funeral arrangements for David “Bud” Jr. Dupris, 39, of Green Grass are pending with First Nations-Oster Funeral Home of Mobridge. Mr. Dupris entered the Spirit World on January 14, 2019 at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Gail Vrooman

Gail Vrooman, 96, of Miller and formerly of Eagle Butte died Saturday, January 12, 2019.

Gail was born on September 5, 1922 to Roy and Etta (Lindsay) Vrooman. He graduated from Eagle Butte High School and attended South Dakota State College of Agriculture majoring in poultry.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II under General Patton and achieved the rank of Sargent.

He farmed in Ziebach and Dewey counties for more than 70 years and retired in Miller, where he resided with his nephew, Robin Vrooman, his wife Gayle and their family.

Edward Leo McGuire

On January 7, 2019, Edward Leo McGuire of Sioux Falls and formerly of Timber Lake passed away at the age of 96. Ed was born on July 1, 1922 in Corson County to Laura and James McGuire.

Ed grew up near Timber Lake and graduated from Timber Lake High School in 1941. He graduated from St. John’s University and served in the military during World War II in the Philippines.

After the war, Ed owned a cafe in Gettysburg, where he met Jane Agnes Coyle. They married September 12, 1949 and had six children: Daniel, Timothy, Laurie, Mark, Joel and Lisa.
