Adeline Lucille La Plante Van Dusen

On Tuesday, March 14, 2019, Adeline Lucille VanDusen, 101, passed away in Lacey, WA from injuries sustained in a fall at her home on March 4. She had just celebrated her 101st birthday with family on January 27. Lucille was the last surviving member of her family. Her lineage was a rich one, consisting of both Native Americans (She was a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe) and immigrants. She and her twin sister, Adelaide Lucy, were born at the family ranch, 13 miles southwest of Timber Lake, on January 27, 1918, the youngest children of Alexander and Johannah (Madsen) LaPlante.

Her grandparents were Louis LaPlante, a French-Canadian, and his wife, Nancy Garreau. Her mother was the daughter of Truels Madsen, a pioneer South Dakota cattleman, and his wife, Karen, who, like Truels, was from Denmark.

When she was a small girl, Lucille’s family moved to Spearfish, where her parents worked for the Normal School.

Nancy Totton

Nancy Ducheneaux Totton, 56, of Promise passed away Monday, April 15, 2019 at Mobridge Regional Hospital. Arrangements are pending with Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge.

La Wayne Jacob Knecht

Services for La Wayne Jacob Knecht, 80, formerly of Mobridge, will be held at Fairhaven Memorial Park in Santa Ana, CA at 12:00 p.m. on April 19, 2019. Survivors include his wife, Genevieve (Goetz) Knecht, formerly of Isabel.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Shriner's Hospital for Children. Condolences may be sent in care of Fairhaven Memorial Park & Mortuary, 1702 Fairhaven Avenue, Santa Ana, CA 92705.

Harold Gage

Funeral services for Harold Gage, 73, of Dupree will be at 11:00 a.m. MT on April 20, 2019 at the United Church of Christ in Dupree. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.

Harold passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge.

Harold was born April 19, 1945 to George and Myrtle (Diermier) Gage in Dupree.

Colette Norma (Opp) Ganje

Colette Ganje, 71, of Rapid City and formerly of Eagle Butte passed away Friday, April 12, 2019 at Fountain Springs Hospice, Rapid City.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. MT, Tuesday, April 23, 2019, at All Saints Catholic Church, Eagle Butte. Burial will be in the Eagle Butte Cemetery.

A scripture and rosary service will be at 7 p.m., Monday, April 22 at the church, with visitation two hours prior.

Colette Norma (Opp) Ganje was born April 9, 1948 in Mobridge to Norman and Ione (Rivers) Opp. She grew up on a ranch in Armstrong County, south of Ridgeview.

She was proud to be raised as a ranch girl and loved to share stories with her children and grandchildren of her adventures and experiences. She attended grade school in Timber Lake through third grade and finished elementary school at the Cheyenne Agency Boarding School. She attended Cheyenne-Eagle Butte High School, where she lived in the dorms, and graduated in 1966.

Ambrose Hosie Jr.

Ambrose Hosie Jr., 77, of McIntosh passed away April 12, 2019 at Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck, ND. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. CT (10 MT) on Thursday, April 18, 2019 at the McIntosh Legion Hall. Burial will be at the Agard Family Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge.

Ambrose was born in Elbowoods, ND on March 22, 1942 to Ambrose Hosie Sr. and Tena Justine (Waters) Hosie. His grandparents were Levi and Hattie Waters and George and Lottie Hosie. He was raised in Nishu until it was flooded and relocated to White Shield.

He attended boarding school at Marty, SD and graduated from White Shield (ND) High School. He graduated from the Aberdeen School of Commerce and Northern State College in Aberdeen. He majored in business administration which led to his early career in the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Aberdeen.

Roy Austin Howard

Roy Austin Howard, 87, of Sweet Home, OR died April 9, 2019 at Samaritan Evergreen Hospice Center in Albany, OR.

He was born, a leap year baby, on Feb. 29, 1932 in Timber Lake to Austin and Margaret Howard. He grew up with six siblings, tending to the ranch, helping the family in any way he could and riding any four-legged critter he could get his hands on.

Mr. Howard served in the Army from 1953 to 1955, earning a National Defense Service Medal. After his service he worked through the Operating Engineers, Local #701 for many years. He worked on many dams including Foster and Green Peter. He also worked on many road projects throughout the Northwest.

He volunteered time at Mollie’s Bakery, The Sweet Home Inn and was employed for several years with Rainier Wood Products in Sweet Home. He was a resident of Sweet Home for over 50 years.

Rain’E Jo Kavanaugh

Rain’E Jo Kavanaugh, 57, of Eagle Butte, passed away Monday, March 25, 2019 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.

Funeral services were held April 5 at the CRST Bingo Hall in Eagle Butte with Rev. Pauline Webb officiating.

Rain’E Jo Kavanaugh (Roanna Ree Cavanaugh) was born June 27, 1961 to Marlene Laundreaux and Marvin Cavanaugh in Eagle Butte, weighing a little over two pounds.

Rain’E attended Swiftbird Day School until the sixth grade, and then Cheyenne-Eagle Butte School through the 10th grade. She obtained her GED in 1983. Rain’E attended United Tribes Educational Technical Center in 1983-84, graduating with a business/clerical degree.

Henry “HP” Holy Bear

Funeral services for Henry “HP” Holy Bear, 65, of Eagle Butte were Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at the Eagle Butte Bingo Hall. Burial was at Black Hills National Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Henry passed away Saturday, March 23, 2019 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Henry Holy Bear was born June 27, 1953, to Joseph “Sandy” Holy Bear Sr. and Emmaline (Swimmer) Rock at the Old Cheyenne River Agency. He was raised by his aunt and uncle, Harry and Agatha Traversie.

He attended school in Eagle Butte and graduated in 1973. Following high school, he entered the US Navy and was stationed in San Diego, CA. After his discharge he returned to Eagle Butte. He worked for the tribe as a driver in the alcohol program.

Nathaniel Little Shield

Nathaniel Little Shield, 44, of Eagle Butte passed away Saturday, March 23, 2019 at Sanford Medical Center, Bismarck, ND.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. MT on Saturday, April 6 at the Cherry Creek Gym. Burial will follow in the Congregational Cemetery at Cherry Creek. A wake service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 4 and 7 p.m. Friday, April 5 at the gym. A procession will take place at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 4 from the hill east of town.
