Region 8B volleyball: Timber Lake, Faith advance to Sweet 16 round

For the third time in the last four years, the Timber Lake varsity volleyball team is in a game to qualify for the state tournament. Appearing in the Region 8B title match has been a semi-regular occurrence for TLHS in recent years, but this year the playoff format has changed.

The Class B sports transition this school year to the Sweet 16 postseason format, so a Region 8B tournament was held last week in lieu of separate District 15 and 16B tournaments. Traditionally, the 15 and 16 winners have played for the Region 8 title, but the new format means that two teams from the region (Timber Lake and Faith) emerge and are reseeded with the 14 other teams from the seven other regions.

Panthers stifle Tigers in playoff win

Timber Lake has advanced to the second round of the 9A football playoffs, as the Panthers defeated the visiting New Underwood Tigers 27-8 on Thursday, Oct. 19 at Doug Kraft Field. Both teams entered with matching 5-3 records, but the Panthers used a fearsome defensive performance to control the game.

They now travel to Corsica this Thursday, Oct. 26 to play Corsica-Stickney. The Jaguars are 9-0 and defeated Herreid/Selby Area 56-6 in the first round. At Timber Lake last Thursday, the #8 Panthers showed a tenacious attitude that they will need to bring with them to beat the #1 Jaguars.
