Letter to the editor

To the editor: I wanted to take this opportunity to share important information regarding the upcoming general election, which will be held November 8th. South Dakota voters have the choice of voting in-person on Election Day or by casting an absentee ballot.

Twenty-one years have passed but barely a tick on the second hand since my son was born, my wife fighting for her life from blood loss. Hearing the panic in the young doctor’s voice and seeing the look of terror on his face as he was losing my wife in front of me was more than any man could take.

There’s probably no animal on our ranch I’ve written about more than Mama Cat. For one thing, she’s been here almost as long as I have. For another, before her arrival we had a hard time keeping barn cats on the ranch.

It starts around this time of year. I get tired all the time; more tired than I should be. More tired than I can attribute to anything I’ve done. So I rest more…much more than should be healthy. Along with my exhaustion comes the hunger.

The older I get, the more I seem to want both less and more. Less time wasted in pointless conversations outside of work. Less mind-numbing drama at work. Less politics. Less time explaining what intelligent people should know by now. Less time at clinics and hospitals.

The big pickle jar is packed with sharp, spicy smells, and bobbing green pickles. Garlic and pepper corns float along the surface of the brine, while the slender brown stems of dill lay stuffed beneath the cucumbers.
