Rondi Aberle took the photo at the right about 5 p.m. MT when she was on Highway 20 at the Promise turn-off. Kelly Landis, who lives just a half mile down the road to Promise, said most of the hail was marble size but some was as large as a ping pong ball. He said the hail lasted about 20 minutes accompanied by wind estimated at 50 mph. About 2 1/2 to 3 inches of rain fell.
Mark Landis photographed some of the damage in the area and another brother, Steve, took photos of some of their cattle that “looked like zebras” after hail pelted their hides.
Mark said the hail was 4 to 5 inches deep on the road and 3 to 4 feet in the ditches.
Damage to crops in the area was substantial; some fields and pastures were a total or near-total loss.
