    The year was 1958. Ed Volden was teaching school in McLaughlin and the U.S. Military Draft was being used to maintain military readiness during the Cold War.

    “I received my draft notice when I was teaching in McLaughlin but I was using my parents’ address in Isabel. My draft notice was sent to Isabel, and I didn’t receive it for a couple weeks when I went home to visit,” Volden recalls.
