The Rev. LaVerne LaPointe, who is presently at McLaughlin, will be ordained at the same time.

The Rt. Rev. George T. Masuda, Episcopal bishop of North Dakota, will perform the ordination rite on the Rev. Mr. Goodhouse, while the Rt. Rev. Harold Jones, suffragan bishop of South Dakota, will ordain the Rev. Mr. LaPointe.

Bishop Masuda is of part Japanese ancestry; while Bishop Jones of part American Indian ancestry; and both candidates for the priesthood are of Indian (Sioux) ancestry.

Both the Rev. Mr. Goodhouse and the Rev. Mr. LaPointe had been ordained as deacons of the Episcopal church two years ago. Mr. Goodhouse, who served as a lay reader for the little Episcopal mission in Timber Lake while the family lived here, is now serving St. Luke’s Church in Fort Yates, ND.

December 8, 2011 Commissioners opt to end voting districts

Changes in Ziebach County population have led members of the county commissioners to agree that it is best to do away with voting districts rather than re-draw district lines. Auditor Cindy Longbrake had prepared two maps which depicted options for redistricting for the commission to review at the Tuesday regular meeting for December, but discussion led quickly led to the possibility of going at-large. Redistricting is tricky for Ziebach, where a good portion of the 2,801 population reside either within the city of Dupree or in the section of Eagle Butte which lies in the county. Other districts represent fewer people while occupying large tracts of the county’s 1,962 square miles. Putting voters in the correct district is difficult because of the large number of people registered with a P.O. box, Longbrake said. Rather than select a 3-to 5-district format, in which there can only be a 10 percent deviation from the lowest to highest populated district, the commission unanimously passed a motion Tuesday for all commissioners to run at-large.
