Lois Beatrice (Makes Trouble) Chasing Hawk was born June 4, 1936 at Dupree to James and Lillian (Clown) Makes Trouble. Lois and her sisters Lorraine (Charging Eagle) and Esther (Chasing Hawk) grew up in Firesteel and attended the Cheyenne Agency School.

She married Cecil Chasing Hawk and together they had six boys— Benedict, Blaine, Leonard “Foss,” Edwin, Justin, and Wade. They settled along the Cherry Creek near Red Scaffold.

Lois was a housewife and Cecil was a ranch hand. They were proud of their boys and the cowboy lifestyle they followed with all competing in rodeos. She was featured in a poster and pamphlets for BIA’s national probate campaign. She traveled to Washington, DC on a trip arranged by Jim Hunt. She toured monuments and the White House and met with lawmakers. At the White House she asked, “Where’s Obama?”

Lois enjoyed being around her many relatives, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Over the years many friends of her sons continue to call her “mom.”

Lois battled health problems in her later years and resided in the Medicine Wheel Village Nursing Home. She was diagnosed with cancer in 2025 and battled courageously until her passing. The family is grateful for all of the staff at the Medicine Wheel Village for their caring and compassionate care.

Lois is survived by her children, Leonard “Foss” Chasing Hawk of Eagle Butte, Ed (Danielle) Chasing Hawk of Sturgis and Connie Chasing Hawk of Eagle Butte; grand children Markata Chasing Hawk, Cyle (Corey) Chasing Hawk, Dustin Ward, Robby Chasing Hawk, CJ Pesicka (Alyssa); and numerous great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Lillian Makes Trouble; husband Cecil; sons Benedict, Blaine, Justin and Wade; granddaughter Jaymie Chasing Hawk; sisters Lorraine (Steve) Charging Eagle and Esther (Allen) Chasing Hawk; and brother Alrick Leroy Makes Trouble.
