Marvin Bertsch

Marvin Bertsch, 89, of Spearfish, formerly of McIntosh and Isabel, passed away on Friday, November 27, 2020 at the Ft. Meade VA Medical Center at Ft. Meade.

Funeral services were held Saturday, December 5, 2020 at Grace Fellowship Church in Spearfish. Burial was at the Chance Cemetery south of Meadow with full military honors.

Marvin was born in Isabel on March 17, 1931. He worked on several farms in the area until he was drafted into the Army in 1952. After he came home from the service he attended Molar Barber College in Fargo, ND and set up his shop in Isabel.

Marvin married the love of his life, Donna Miles Bertsch, on January 5, 1958 in Bison. They had five children: Edith and Janet Doan, Kim Bertsch, Tammy Bertsch and Korbyn Scott Bertsch. The family moved to McIntosh in 1966 where he opened another barbershop. Marvin barbered in both of those towns for over 50 years.

Marvin was active in the American Legion for over 60 years and so enjoyed working with the veterans. In McIntosh he was the Commander of the American Legion post, veteran service officer for many years, as well as the mayor of McIntosh.

When Marvin and his wife retired and moved to Spearfish in 2013, he was an active member in the American Legion Post there. He enjoyed visiting with veterans in the facilities there as well as attending numerous Legion conventions and meetings.

He loved spending time with family and so enjoyed his grandchildren. He liked gardening and taking care of his flowers as that was a special little hobby for him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emmanuel and Bertha Bertsch; sons Kim and Korry; daughter Janet; brothers Ted and Calvin; and sisters Doris and Lorraine.

He is survived by his wife Donna; daughters Tammy and Edith (Wayne) Grefsrud; sister Monie Motis; grandchildren Bergen, Rick, Korbyn, Evan, Monica, Magazu, Wakanyan, Derek, Niki, Joshua, Christa, Dana and Denise.
