Carrie passed away Saturday, November 21, 2020 at the Dougherty House in Sioux Falls.
Carrie Jewett was born January 27, 1938 to Agnes Two Lance Jewett and Joseph Jewett. Her parents lived most of their life along the Moreau River. After Carrie was born her family lived at White Horse for a few years, then moved to the area where the old home place is now near Promise. They lived in the Promise area until her father had a disagreement with the Tribal Cattle Repayment Program officials, so they moved to Mobridge. They had quite a time in this town, being a predominantly white town. They had to go through quite a bit of ridicule, but as it turned out, it made their family a little tougher and closer, as they had to stick together. She went to school in Mobridge and gained her high school education in St. Elizabeth Mission School in Wakpala and the Cheyenne River Boarding School, where she graduated in May of 1956, as the valedictorian. She attended National School of Business in Rapid City, where she received her stenographic diploma.
In March, 1957, she relocated to Los Angeles, CA, where she met and married Frederick L. Fast Horse. They had two children, a son, Paul Maurice, and a daughter, Renee Lenore. After five years Carrie and Paul divorced. Three years later Carrie married Earl DeMarrias and they had a daughter, Michelle DeVonne. They divorced shortly after she was born. Carrie moved back and forth between southern California and South Dakota until 1971.
She was living in California when a bad earthquake occurred. Since that time, she has resided permanently in South Dakota, preferring blizzards, tornadoes, unpredictable winds and weather to earthquakes.
She worked for the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe in different capacities for approximately ten years. In November of 1978, she was hired permanently at the Bureau of Indian Affairs Roads Department. She retired in 2014.
Carrie is survived by her daughter, Renee Iron Hawk, son Paul Fast Horse, Charles Kuntz; grandchildren Rochelle (Rokie) Red Bird, Felicia Fast Horse, Shotay Fast Horse, Dominque Quick Bear, Michon Shaving, Paul Fast Horse Jr., and Claudia Iron Hawk; great-grandchildren Enaesha Bobtail Bear, Eric Bobtail Bear Jr., Maximus Bobtail Bear, Magnus Bobtail Bear, Matthew Bobtail Bear, Rowdy Bobtail Bear, Renietta Bobtail Bear, Curryn Bobtail Bear, Dominic Fasthorse, Alycia Jordan, Cameron Jordan, Lorraina Jordan, Carmelo Jordan, Sophia Jordan, Chloe Jordan, and King Jordan.
She is preceded in death by her daughter Michelle; husband Frederick Fast Horse; brothers Waldon Maynard and Melvin Joseph Jewett; sisters Fern Walters, Lillian Jewett, and Lucille Towry; and her parents, Joseph and Agnes (Two Lance) Jewett.
