Alva “Sweetpea” Scares the Hawk, 54, of White Horse passed away December 8, 2020 at Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck, ND with her family by her side.
In compliance with the CRST Tribal Directives, a private family service will be held Friday, December 18, 2020, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in White Horse. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Sweetpea was born January 17, 1966 in Eagle Butte to Bernida Joyce Traversie and Edward Scares The Hawk. When she was a toddler, they lived in Ohio for a short time, then moved to Chicago, IL, where she lived and enjoyed her life and gained a lot of friends that have become family. She lived in Chicago until she was 36, when she moved to South Dakota to be with her sister, Dee, and family. She received a house in White Horse in 2004, and she spent all of her years there until her passing. She met the love of her life, Lambi Lind, in 2006.
Sweetpea loved spending time with her family and friends. She loved to dance, spend time at the river, have cookouts, and go cruising with the music full blast and blaring. She also loved to go sightseeing, especially when she went to the mountains. She loved family get togethers, especially birthdays and holidays.
Sweetpea always made sure that everyone around her never went without. She had a smile that would light up the room and a heart as bright and big as the moon. She didn't have children of her own, but she took her sister's children as her own. Her door was always open for her family and friends.
Sweetpea is survived by her fiancé, Lawrence “Lambie” Lind of White Horse; step-son, Little Lawrence of White Horse; her dogs Spencer, Ruebon, Lady and Mni Sni; her sister, Lynn Hawk (Victor P.) of Huron; brother Apache Hawk of Rapid City; nephews and nieces:
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Edwina "Dee" Morales and Rosa Cook; her parents; niece, Durane Dog Eagle; grandmothers Jenny Makes Him First and Julia Traversie; uncle Jack Jewett; aunt, Judy Big Eagle; grandfathers Severt Blue Coat and Levi Traversie; and a very special friend, Carrie Iron Wing.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg is in charge of arrangements.
