Thomas Richard “Dick” Dugan was born May 8, 1933 to Emmet and Angeline (Hammon) Dugan in Le Mars, Iowa.
In 1944 the family moved to Gordon, NE. In 1952, they moved to South Dakota and leased the Cobb Ranch north of Isabel.
Dick enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1953 and served until 1955; he served in the Korean War. Upon returning Dick married Emma Jean Dahl on July 28, 1960. They lived with his parents and worked on the ranch with his father. In 1963 Dick and Emma Jean purchased the Harold Deans ranch 22 miles northwest of Isabel, where they raised five children: Tom, Gina, Mike, Pat and Deb.
Dick was hard working and meticulous. The cattle were a top priority. He took pride in how the ranch and the vehicles looked. You wouldn’t find a better-looking ranch in the area when it came to keeping fences in the best shape, the corrals and buildings painted. Keeping all the tractors and other equipment spotless, always maintained and ready to go so the haying season could begin making and hauling countless square bales.
Dick had a love for fast cars. He always had stories to tell about old cars and had incredible memory for the years and specific of cars. He was particularly proud of his 1956 Ford Fairlane, which he kept in tip top shape at all times.
Another enjoyment in Dick’s life was his animals. Early on, he loved a good saddle horse and made sure the kids had one as well. Later on, he loved his dogs and cats. He enjoyed long walks and four-wheeler rides with his dogs and taking care of his cats.
Dick always looked forward to the grandkids stopping in for a visit and helping him with any chores he needed done. It wasn’t often when Dick would go out and about, but when he did, he enjoyed visiting and telling stories for hours with people.
His family acknowledges the many guardian angels in his life: Anne and Brice Roghair and family, Cindy Lensegrav, Mary Kraft, Jaimie, Sandi Paulson and Dode Ley.
Dick is survived by his children: Tom Dugan of Isabel, Gina (Eddie) Beer of Isabel and Deb Dugan(Tim Baxter) of Redfield; grandchildren Shayla Beer and Bradyn Beer of Isabel; Abbigail Dugan of Aberdeen; Emmet and Austynn Dugan of Sioux Falls; Isaac and JayDe Assman of Isabel; Tim (Jaimie) Reinbold of Redfield; Kyle Reinbold of Spearfish; great-grandchildren Treyden Beer, Liam and Ian Reinbold; DeAndra and Brooklyn Reinbold and Abbigail’s baby expected later this year; sisters-in-law, Delores(Buzz)Hall of Pueblo, CO, Patty Maher (Jimmy Mobley) of Gillette, WY, Donna(Don)Beach of Homer, NE, Jan (Dallas) Ingels of Shadehill, SD and several nieces and nephews.
