Garrett gets hitched, still gets paid

Eagle Butte saddle bronc rider Shorty Garrett managed to work a couple of rodeos around his wedding recently, competing in the inaugural “Back When They Bucked” event at the Days of ‘76 Rodeo Grounds in Deadwood on Sunday, May 31, and taking part in the Casey Tibbs Match of Champions Xtreme Broncs competition Saturday, June 5, in Fort Pierre.

In Deadwood, Garrett scored 86 points on Sutton Rodeo bull Gangster to finish fifth overall in the saddle bronc event.

In Fort Pierre, Garrett drew Gangster once again in the first round, this time riding him to an 84.5 point score and a tie for sixth place which paid $511 in prize money. In the finals, judges gave him 88.5 points on Dakota Rodeo bull “Cash Deal,” which tied Garrett for fourth and paid out $378.

Also competing in the saddle bronc competition at the Match of Champions but not finishing in the money were Jacob Kammerer of Philip with 82 points, Cole Elshere of Faith with 80 points, Dylan Schofield of Philip with 73 points, Chuck Schmidt of Kalderon (no score) and Kash Deal of Eagle Butte (no score).
