Janet “Little Sue” Campbell, 73, of Eagle Butte and formerly of Gettysburg, passed away on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at the Onida Methodist Church in Onida. Burial was in the Onida Cemetery.
Janet was born to Jack Ennis and Jennie Elizabeth (Annis) Hunt on August 28, 1948 in Pierre weighing 2 lbs., 4 oz. She was given the name Mary Ann by the nuns at St. Mary’s Hospital and her twin was named Anna Marie. Later on, their father, Jack would call them “the Susies.” Big Sue was later named Janice and little Sue was named Janet. She was the first born and always cared for and loved by her twin, Big Sue.
The family was raised on a ranch near Eagle Butte; she rode horseback to school. Janet later went to Stephan Mission boarding school, graduating from high school in 1968. She began working for Tex and Edie Bennett at Eagle Butte and soon had her first child, Jacqueline Jennifer. Two years later she gave birth to Turner Jack.
In 1973 she married the love of her life, Colin Campbell. They brought Colin Gene into the family and shortly after everyone welcomed Tori Lee.
Janet and Colin made their home on a farm in Sully County and later moved into Agar. Janet babysat in Agar, and all of these children became part of the family. She cleaned houses, cared for the infirm and elderly in the area, baked, and attended any and all of the children’s school activities. She was always their biggest fan. Janet learned to drive at the age of 30, loved to be wild, and dressed up at Halloween, and scared anyone around.
Janet lost her sight and she and Colin moved to Gettysburg. She learned to manage on her own and began her life as a snow bird. She enjoyed her time in Arizona with her daughter, Jennifer. In 2017 she moved to Arizona full time until she came home to spend her last months with her family around the Eagle Butte area.
