May 9, 1948 – January 21, 2022

Mass of Christian Burial for Susan K. Schneider, 73, of McIntosh was held Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at St. Bonaventure’s Catholic Church in McIntosh with Fr. Adam Hofer officiating.

Burial will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 27, 2022 at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with Fr. Tony Grossenburg officiating.

Military Honors will be afforded by the Ralph T. Ankerson American Legion Post #139 of McIntosh and the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard.

Sue passed from this life suddenly on Friday, January 21, 2022 at Mobridge Regional Hospital.

Susan Katherine Nehl “Sue” was born on May 9, 1948 in Lemmon to Mark and Evelyn (Short) Nehl. She grew up in Keldron where she attended school and graduated from Lemmon High School in 1966. Sue was Homecoming Queen, a cheerleader, participated in school plays, and served on the Student Council as and on the school Rifle Team.

Sue attended Radiology Tech School in Minneapolis, MN and later received nuclear training in Salt Lake City, UT.

She enlisted into the US Army on July 21, 1967 and served in Germany, Washington, DC and Utah. She earned the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. She was honorably discharged on July 11, 1970.

Sue worked as a rural mail carrier in the Keldron area and with her husband operated Shadehill Store until moving to Sisseton in 1983, where she worked for IHS and Coteau Hospital.

Les and Sue returned to McIntosh in 2001 where she continued to work for the IHS. She retired after 32 years in November of 2011.

She was a member of St. Bonaventure’s Catholic Church in McIntosh and St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Sisseton. She taught many years of Catechism, served in various roles and made prayer blankets, and cancer blankets with the “Community Kicking Cancer” group.

Keeping her in their fondest memories are her husband Lester, McIntosh; her children: Seth and Amber and their children Oliva, Ryan, and Kora, Marion, IN; Sonya and her husband Joey Puetz and their children Payton and Coy, Mitchell; Justin and his wife Brittany and their children Ivy and Braelyn, Watauga; her siblings and their spouses, Mike and Cheri Nehl, Belle Fourche; Jim and Linda Nehl, Keldron; Joe and Vicky Nehl, Worland, WY; Tom Nehl, Upton, WY; Rich and Bonnie Nehl, Butte, MT; Bill and Shirley Struble, Rapid City; brothers and sisters-in-law, Darrell Schneider, Gun Barrel City, TX, Ted (Tana) Schneider, Spencer, IA; Ellen (Toots) Heathcoat, Martinez, CA; Brenda Schneider, McIntosh; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister-in-law Evie Nehl; her mother- and father-in-law, Bernard and Irene Schneider; brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Cindy Schneider; and a nephew, Collin Schneider.
