Dorothy Campbell

March 10, 1926 –February 10, 2022

Dorothy Campbell, 95, of McIntosh, passed away on Thursday, February 10, 2022 at the Sturgis Longterm Care in Sturgis.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 17, 2022 at the First Presbyterian Church in McIntosh. Burial will follow in the McIntosh City Cemetery.

Dorothy was born March 10, 1926 in Glen Ullin, ND to Mike and Lena (Bleth) Braun. She moved to Mandan, ND as an infant, and the family moved to the Morristown-Watauga area. Dorothy was home schooled by her mom in the early grades and attended the Watauga school, where she finished her freshman year. She graduated from McIntosh High School in 1945.

Dorothy met Maurice Campbell in 1942 at a dance in McIntosh and their love story began. They loved dancing the two-step, old time waltzes and polkas. On May 29, 1945 Maurice and Dorothy were married in Miles City, MT. They resided on the Campbell homestead south of McIntosh where Maurice ranched with his dad. Four children were born to this union, Daryl, Dawne, Mona and Marla.

Dorothy suffered a stroke in 1956, just before her 30th birthday. A cerebral hemorrhage caused paralysis of the right side of her body. She did learn to walk again, but never regained use of her right arm and hand. This did not slow her down. Besides raising her four kids, she reported the local news for the Corson County News until the age of 92. She also wrote articles for the Aberdeen American News. She opened and operated a small gift shop from their home until photography sparked her interest. She opened Dot's Photos, capturing memories for area residents; taking senior, wedding, family and children's pictures, all with the help of Maurice.

From 1967 to 1971 Dorothy and Maurice opened Dot's Rec, a youth center for kids.

After all her children were raised, Dorothy began helping Maurice on the ranch. She enjoyed running the swather and helping with the cattle, becoming attached to the ranch life. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

In 2019, Dorothy fractured her leg and moved to Sturgis to be closer to family.
