Monte Curtis Knight was born August 8, 1948 in Pierre to Jess A. and Edith (LaPlante) Knight, the eldest of eight children. The name “Buckshot” was given to him by his Grandfather Wally Knight, after the pro roper “Buckshot” Sorrels.

Buck attended St. Joseph Indian School, and Eagle Butte public school. He quit school early to enlist in the Army, and later attained his GED. While he was in the Army, he spent time in Germany, and fought in the Vietnam War. He was a member of the 101st Airborne “Screaming Eagles” Division. He spent the majority of his life traveling the world, and practicing spiritual traditions of his Lakota heritage.

Buck is rememberd as a free-wheeling, risk taking, story-telling character. The people he met would say he was complicated, and most would think their lives were richer for having known him. And for all of his adventures, he never missed an opportunity to tell anyone that would listen how proud he was of his children.

Buckshot is survived by his daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren: Dawnita Knight (and grandson Sonny Dutchover and greatgranddaughter Emelia Dutchover), Corrinne (Justin) Mark (and grandsons Teagan and Weldon), and Ronni (Will) Taylor; brothers and sisters: Lona Knight, Tom and Carol Knight, Bill Knight, Jess “JR” Knight and Marsha Lytle, Lucy Knight, and Mark and Connie Knight.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jeffery Knight.
